Tracking Your Federal Tax Refund Status: A Guide for Kent Taxpayers

Whether you are a service-based entrepreneur planning your next quarter or a retiree managing monthly expenses, knowing when that capital will be available is a key part of your financial picture.

As part of a broader push toward digital efficiency and security—a philosophy we share in our own hybrid cloud/local office environment—the IRS is actively moving away from paper checks. Electronic transfers reduce the risk of mail theft and significantly speed up processing. While alternative methods like prepaid debit cards exist for those without bank accounts, direct deposit remains the gold standard for speed.

Using the "Where’s My Refund?" Tool

Regardless of how you receive the funds, if you are due a refund, you do not need to guess when it will arrive. The IRS offers a reliable online resource to track your status.

Where’s My Refund? is an interactive tool available nearly 24/7. If we e-filed your return (which allows for the fastest processing), you can usually access your status 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt. Nine out of 10 taxpayers utilizing e-file with direct deposit typically see their refunds within 21 days.

For the minority of taxpayers filing paper returns, patience is required; information generally becomes available four weeks after mailing. Since the system updates once every 24 hours (usually overnight), checking once a day is sufficient.

What You Need to Check Your Status

To keep your data secure, the IRS requires you to verify your identity against the specific return currently in the system. Before you log in, have your copy of the federal tax return we prepared for you handy. You will need to enter:

  • Your Social Security Number (or ITIN),

  • The specific tax year (options currently include 2025, 2024, and 2023),

  • Your filing status (e.g., single, married filing jointly, head of household), and

  • The exact refund amount shown on your return.

Decoding the Status Updates

Once your information is verified, the tool will display one of three stages in the pipeline:

  • Acknowledgement: The IRS has received the return and it is in the processing queue.

  • Refund Approved: Processing is complete, and the IRS is preparing to issue the funds by a specific date.

  • Refund Sent: The funds are on their way to your bank or a check has been mailed. Note that it may take up to 5 days for your bank to post the funds to your account.

The tool also provides links to customized information if there is a snag in the process. For example, if you have not received your refund within 28 days of the mailed date listed in the system, the tool allows you to initiate a refund trace online.

Mobile Options and Accessibility

For our clients who prefer managing their finances on the go via smartphone, IRS2Go is the official mobile app for checking refund status. It is free and available for both Apple and Android devices. You can find download instructions at IRS2Go.

Additionally, the Where’s My Refund? tool is accessible to visually impaired taxpayers, supporting the Job Access with Speech screen reader and Braille displays.

When Should You Contact Us?

The Where’s My Refund? tool has the most current data available. Generally, there is no need to call the IRS directly unless the tool specifically instructs you to do so.
