July 2026 Business Tax Deadlines: Your Mid-Year Compliance Guide

Welcome to the second half of the year. For many service-based entrepreneurs and business owners in Kent, WA, July requires more than just enjoying the Pacific Northwest summer—it is a critical month for mid-year tax compliance. At Apex Tax & Financial Solutions, our advisory-first approach is designed to keep you financially literate and tax-efficient year-round. Missing mid-year deadlines can trigger unnecessary penalties and disrupt your closely managed cash flow.

To help you stay on track, Alvin Wolcott, CPA, CFP, and our team have compiled the essential federal business tax due dates for July 2026.

Pension and Employee Benefit Plan Reporting

For business owners and self-employed individuals maintaining employee benefit plans, July brings a significant filing requirement. If you sponsor a pension, profit-sharing, or stock bonus plan, you may need to file Form 5500 or 5500-EZ for the 2025 calendar year.

While the absolute deadline is July 31, 2026, we strongly recommend a proactive review by July 1. Assessing your filing requirements early gives our hybrid cloud-and-local office team ample time to prepare the return and ensure accurate compliance. If your business utilizes a fiscal year for its plan, remember that this form is due by the last day of the seventh month following the end of your plan year.

Mid-Month Payroll and Nonpayroll Tax Deposits

Managing cash flow is a primary concern for the service-based entrepreneurs we serve. Staying current with payroll tax deposits is vital to maintaining healthy financial operations and avoiding IRS scrutiny.

By July 15, 2026, employers operating under the monthly deposit rule must deposit Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes for payments made during June. Additionally, this mid-month deadline applies to nonpayroll withholding. If you rely on our firm for investment oversight or business advisory, we can help you structure your cash flow planning to ensure these monthly liabilities are managed without causing operational friction.

Second Quarter Filings and FUTA Deadlines

The end of the month brings a cluster of crucial quarterly deadlines. By July 31, employers must file Form 941 for the second quarter of 2026. At this time, you are required to deposit or pay any undeposited tax under the accuracy of deposit rules.

If your tax liability for the quarter is less than $2,500, you have the option to pay it in full with a timely filed return. Conversely, if you have already deposited your tax for the quarter in full and on time, the IRS grants an automatic administrative extension, giving you until August 10 to file the return.

July 31 is also the deadline for certain small employers to deposit undeposited taxes if their liability is $2,500 or more for 2026 but fell below the $2,500 threshold for the second quarter. Furthermore, employers must deposit their Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA) owed through June if the accumulated amount exceeds $500.

Navigating Holidays and Disaster Area Extensions

Tax deadlines are occasionally subject to shifts based on the calendar or unforeseen geographical events. As a general rule, if a federal due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline is automatically extended to the next business day that is not a legal holiday.

For businesses impacted by severe weather or natural disasters, the IRS frequently grants relief. When a geographical area is designated as a disaster area, filing and payment due dates are often extended to help affected business owners focus on recovery. To verify whether your region qualifies for an extension, you can review the latest declarations on the following government websites:
